This Voyager 1 picture of the outermost Galilean satellite, Callisto, was taken Feb. 28, through a violet filter from a distance of about 5 million miles (7 million kilometers). Callisto is the darkest of the four Galilean satellites of Jupiter, but is still nearly twice as bright as Earth's Moon. It shows a mottled appearance consisting of bright and dark patches. The bright spots remind scientists of rayed or bright halved craters, similar to those seen on our Moon. This face of Callisto is always turned toward Jupiter.
